New Orleans-bound train eases to a stop at west end of yard in Meridian, Mississippi, in August 1974. Southern Pacific Railroad (SP) locomotives stand ready to lead train to Houston, Texas. In the mid-1970s, SP and Southern Railway began operating mixed motive power between Birmingham's Norris yard and SP's Inglewood yard in Houston. Normally, the SP units ran into Birmingham.
