A railroad worker holds up an order hoop for the crew of Amtrak locomotive 417, which is pulling a San Joaquin train past the Santa Fe depot at Port Chicago, California, on March 6, 1974. That was the first day of operation onto the Southern Pacific here, and a railroad official wearing a suit can be seen leaning out of the locomotive door to catch the first set of orders.
